How to use

  1. Paste the original text on the left and the changed version on the right.

  3. Green marks text that was added; red with strikethrough marks text that was removed.
  4. Use Copy to take the comparison as plain text.

Choosing a comparison unit

Unit How it compares Best for
Lines Whole lines. A one-letter change shows the line as removed and re-added Code, config files, lists
Words Words and punctuation marks Contracts, articles, essays and other prose
Characters Every single character Typos, IDs and serial numbers, short phrases

Example

Changing The meeting starts at 10 a.m. on Monday. to The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. gives:

  • Words: :30 added after 10, Monday removed, Tuesday added
  • Characters: :30 added, and only Mon → Tues marked, since day is shared
  • Lines: the whole first line removed and the new line added

Options and copy format

  • Ignore case treats Hello and hello as equal. Matching parts are shown as written in the changed text.
  • Ignore leading/trailing spaces (line mode) treats lines that differ only in indentation or trailing spaces as equal. Word mode always ignores differences in the amount of whitespace between words.
  • Copied output uses + , - and two spaces as line prefixes in line mode, and the [-removed-]{+added+} notation used by git diff --word-diff in word and character mode.
  • Windows (CRLF) versus Unix (LF) line endings, and a missing newline at the very end, are not reported as differences.

FAQ

Why does a moved line show up twice?

The comparison follows the order of the text, so a line that moved appears as removed in one place and added in another. To compare lists regardless of order, sort both with sort lines first.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but a character-level comparison of two long, very different texts can take a while. If it takes more than about 1.5 seconds the tool stops and suggests line mode instead.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so it is safe for contracts and internal documents.
