How to use
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Characters, words, lines and bytes update as you type.
- If you have a length limit, enter a target length to see how many characters you have left.
How things are counted
| Metric | Rule |
|---|---|
| Characters | Every visible character, including spaces and line breaks. Emoji such as 👍🏽 or 👨👩👧 count as one, the way you see them |
| No spaces | Characters excluding spaces, tabs and line breaks |
| Words | Groups of characters separated by whitespace |
| Bytes (UTF-8) | The encoding used on the web. ASCII = 1 byte, accented letters = 2, most CJK = 3, emoji = 4 |
Example
“Hello world” has 11 characters, 10 without spaces, 2 words and 11 UTF-8 bytes.
FAQ
Do character limits include spaces?
Usually yes — most forms, social networks and application portals count spaces. This tool shows both numbers so you can check either rule.
Why can byte count differ from character count?
UTF-8 uses more bytes for non-ASCII characters, so “café” is 4 characters but 5 bytes. Database and SMS limits are often defined in bytes.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, and the text is gone when you close the page.
