How to use

  1. Press Start to begin a 25-minute focus session. The countdown also appears in the browser tab title.
  2. When it ends, a chime plays and a 5-minute break starts automatically. After every fourth focus session you get a 15-minute long break.
  3. Pause and Resume whenever you need to; Skip ends the current phase and moves on.
  4. Change the durations and the number of sessions before a long break in the fields below. Turn on desktop notifications to be alerted while you work in another tab.

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It is named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used — pomodoro is Italian for tomato.

Phase Default What to do
Focus (one pomodoro) 25 min Work on a single task; park notifications and messages
Short break 5 min Stand up, stretch, get some water
Long break 15 min Take a longer rest after every four focus sessions

Example

A full set with the default settings takes 25 min × 4 focus + 5 min × 3 short breaks + 15 min long break = 130 minutes, of which 100 minutes are focused work. If you get into deep work easily, try 50 minutes on and 10 off; on days when starting is hard, a 15-minute focus session lowers the barrier.

Things to keep in mind

  • Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, so the chime works after you press Start once. Use Test sound to check your volume.
  • On phones, sounds and notifications may be delayed or skipped when the screen is off or the browser is in the background. The countdown is based on the end time, so it is correct again as soon as you return.
  • Settings and counts are not saved; refreshing the page starts over.
  • To time individual tasks, use the stopwatch. For days left until an exam or deadline, try the D-Day calculator.

FAQ

Does skipping a focus session count it as done?

Yes. Skipping during a focus session counts it and moves you to a break. Press Start over to reset the count.

Can I stop the next phase from starting automatically?

Uncheck Start the next phase automatically. The timer will then stop at the end of each phase until you press Start.

Why don’t I get desktop notifications?

Notifications may be blocked for this site in your browser or by your operating system’s focus or do-not-disturb mode. Check the site settings next to the address bar.
