How age is calculated
Age counts completed years: you are 0 at birth and gain a year on each birthday. If this year’s birthday has not arrived yet, your age is the current year minus your birth year, minus one.

Other ways of counting age
- Year age is simply the current year minus the birth year, ignoring the birthday. A few Korean laws still use it, including the Youth Protection Act (alcohol and tobacco sales) and the Military Service Act.
- Korean counting age starts at 1 at birth and adds a year every January 1, so it can be up to two years higher than your actual age. Since June 28, 2023, South Korea uses international age for legal and administrative purposes unless a law says otherwise.
Things to keep in mind
- Leap-day birthdays: for people born on February 29, this calculator adds the year on March 1 in common years. Laws differ — some places treat February 28 as the birthday instead.
- Chinese zodiac is shown by birth year. The zodiac year actually begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20, so people born early in the year may belong to the previous animal.
- Star sign boundaries can shift by a day from year to year.
