How to use
- Pick a calculation at the top.
- Add / subtract: enter hours, minutes and seconds for two durations. Blank fields count as 0.
- Between two times: enter a start and end time, plus an optional unpaid break.
- Sum a list: paste one duration per line to total a timesheet.
- Decimal ↔ h:m: convert 7.75 hours to 7 h 45 m, or the other way round.
- The result appears as “5h 10m”, with h:mm:ss, decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds below.
How it works
Every duration is converted to seconds, combined, then split back into hours, minutes and seconds (1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds).
| Calculation | Method | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Add | Sum in seconds, carry every 60 | 3:20 + 1:50 = 3:70 → 5:10 |
| Subtract | Negative results get a minus sign | 1:50 − 3:20 = −1:30 |
| Between two times | End − start; add 24 h if the end is earlier | 10:00 PM → 6:30 AM = 8h 30m |
| Decimal → h:m | Fractional part × 60 = minutes | 7.75 h = 7 h + 0.75 × 60 m = 7h 45m |
| h:m → decimal | Minutes ÷ 60 | 1h 20m = 1 + 20 ÷ 60 = 1.333 h |
In Sum a list you can mix formats: 8:30 (h:mm), 1:30:15 (h:mm:ss), 1h 30m, 90 minutes, 2.5 (a bare number means hours) and 09:00-17:30 (a clock range). Start a line with - to subtract it.
Example
A week logged as 8:30, 9h 15m, 7:45, 09:00-17:30 and 7.5 adds up to 8.5 + 9.25 + 7.75 + 8.5 + 7.5 = 41.5 hours (41h 30m). A clock range counts the full span, so to take out a 30-minute lunch add a line with -0:30, or use Between two times with a break.
Things to watch
- Decimal hours are not hours.minutes. 7.5 hours is 7 h 30 m, not 7 h 50 m. Payroll systems usually want decimal hours — the table below converts common minute values.
- Between two times handles spans up to 24 hours. For spans across several days, use the date difference calculator.
- Results are rounded to the nearest second.
FAQ
How many minutes is 0.1 hours?
0.1 × 60 = 6 minutes. Likewise, 0.25 h is 15 minutes and 0.5 h is 30 minutes.
How are overnight shifts handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the end is treated as the next day and 24 hours are added. A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8 h 30 m.
Can I find the time difference between cities?
Yes — the time difference calculator compares time zones, including daylight saving time.
