How to use
- Drop your JPG or PNG images onto the box or click to choose them. You can add many at once.
- Set the quality. For photos the default of 80 is usually plenty; for screenshots and logos with text, 90 or higher is recommended.
- Check the savings in the results list and download files individually or as a ZIP.
Conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded. If this browser cannot save WebP, you will be told right away.
Why WebP
WebP is an image format Google designed for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. According to Google’s published comparison, lossy WebP is 25–34% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality (measured by SSIM), and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. Lighter images make blogs and online stores load faster and use less data.
| Original | After converting to WebP | Suggested quality |
|---|---|---|
| JPG photo | Usually smaller at similar quality | 75–85 |
| PNG photo | Much smaller | 75–85 |
| PNG logo or screenshot | Transparency kept, smaller file | 90+ |
Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 14 or later, all display WebP.
Things to know
- Well-compressed JPGs may barely shrink, or even grow. Files that end up larger are flagged in the results — keep the original for those, or lower the quality.
- Not everything accepts WebP. Some upload forms, older apps and email setups don’t support it. You can always convert back with WebP to JPG.
- Safari may display WebP but not create it. If your browser can’t save WebP, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Animated GIFs are converted using the first frame only, and EXIF metadata is not kept.
FAQ
How do I make the files even smaller?
Reducing dimensions helps far more than lowering quality. In Resize Image you can choose WebP as the output format and do both in one step. To compress while keeping each file’s original format, use Compress Image.
Is PNG transparency preserved?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, so the transparent parts of logos and icons stay transparent.
