Add Page Numbers to PDF

Add page numbers to a PDF in the position and format you choose.

Runs in your browser · No upload Works offline

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF onto the box or click to choose it.
  2. Pick one of six positions with Vertical position (top or bottom) and Horizontal position (left, center or right).
  3. Set the format, start number, font size (pt) and distance from the edge (mm). Turn on Skip the first page to leave the cover unnumbered.
  4. The preview renders the first numbered page with exactly the same code used for saving. When it looks right, press Add numbers and save.

Formats and numbering

Format 10-page document, start 1 With the cover skipped
1 1 … 10 1 on page 2, 9 on the last page
1 / N 1 / 10 … 10 / 10 1 / 9 … 9 / 9
- 1 - - 1 - … - 10 - - 1 - … - 9 -
Page 1 of N Page 1 of 10 … Page 1 of 9 …

N is the number printed on the last page. Set the start number to 5 and a 10-page document runs 5 / 14 … 14 / 14 — handy when a file continues the numbering of a previous volume.

How the position is worked out

The distance is measured from the page edge to the number; 10 mm is about 28.3 pt (1 mm = 72/25.4 pt). Pages stored sideways (rotation 90° or 270°) are handled by the way they appear on screen: “bottom center” is the bottom as you see it, and the number is drawn upright. Pages of different sizes each get a position based on their own size.

Things to know

  • Numbers use the standard PDF font Helvetica, which covers Latin characters, so formats are limited to digits and English words. No font file is embedded, so the file barely grows.
  • Numbers are drawn on top of existing content. If something is already printed there, they will overlap — check the preview and adjust the distance.
  • A PDF you opened with a password is saved without the password.
  • To number several files continuously, combine them first with Merge PDF.

FAQ

Can I remove the numbers later?

Not with this tool. Your original file is untouched, so you can start again from it.

Are the numbers searchable?

Yes. They are added as real text, not as an image, so they can be selected and searched.

Can I skip both the cover and the contents page?

Only the first page can be skipped. For more, split off the front matter with Split PDF, number the main part, then merge them back.
