Conversion factors
Inches, feet, yards and miles have been defined in terms of the meter since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, so these factors are exact, not rounded.

| 1 foot (ft) | 0.3048 m | 12 inches |
| 1 yard (yd) | 0.9144 m | 3 feet |
| 1 mile (mi) | 1,609.344 m | 5,280 feet |
| 1 nautical mile (nmi) | 1,852 m | international nautical mile |

Examples
- A 5 ft 9 in person is 69 inches tall, which is 175.26 cm.
- A 55-inch TV measures 55 × 2.54 = 139.7 cm across the diagonal.
- A marathon (42.195 km) is about 26.22 miles.
- A 100-yard football field is 91.44 m between the goal lines.
Things to keep in mind
- Screen sizes in inches are diagonal measurements, so a 65-inch TV is not “18% bigger” in area than a 55-inch one — it is about 40% bigger. Use the area converter for square units.
- Survey feet and miles used in some older US land records differ very slightly (about 2 parts per million) from the international values used here.
- For shipping boxes, the CBM calculator works out volume from length, width and height.
