How to use
- Pick a content type at the top: URL, text, Wi-Fi, contact, email, phone or SMS.
- Fill in the fields and the QR code is drawn immediately. Encoded content below shows the exact string inside the code.
- Adjust error correction, image size, quiet zone and colors if needed, then download a PNG or SVG. SVG scales without blurring, which makes it the better choice for print and design files.
What goes into each type
| Type | Encoded format | When scanned |
|---|---|---|
| URL | https://example.com |
Opens in the browser |
| Wi-Fi | WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;H:false;; |
Offers to join the network |
| Contact | vCard 3.0 (BEGIN:VCARD … END:VCARD) |
Saves a contact |
mailto:address?subject=…&body=… |
Opens a new email | |
| Phone | tel:+15550100 |
Opens the dialer |
| SMS | SMSTO:+15550100:message |
Opens a new text message |
- If you leave out
https://, it is added for you. - Characters
\ ; , : "in a Wi-Fi name or password are escaped with a backslash. Without that, a password containing a semicolon would be cut short. - Email subjects and bodies are percent-encoded (a space becomes
%20). For working with URLs directly, use the URL encoder.
Error correction and quiet zone
| Level | Recoverable damage (approx.) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| L | 7% | Lots of data, on-screen display |
| M | 15% | Everyday print (default) |
| Q | 25% | Surfaces that get scuffed or dirty |
| H | 30% | Placing a logo over the center |
Higher levels add modules, so the same content makes a denser code. https://toolulah.com, for example, is version 2 (25×25 modules) at M and version 3 (29×29) at H. With the default 4-module quiet zone and a 512 px download, each module at level M is about 15.5 px wide.
The QR code standard (ISO/IEC 18004) calls for a quiet zone of at least 4 modules around the symbol. Trimming it or placing the code directly on a busy background makes scanning less reliable.
Things to watch
- Use a dark foreground on a light background. The tool warns when contrast is low or the colors are inverted (light modules on dark), because some scanners cannot read those.
- These are static codes: the content lives in the image itself, so they never expire — but you cannot change them after printing. Test the printed size with a few different phones first.
- A Wi-Fi code contains the password in plain text. Only post it where sharing the network is fine. Need a new password? Try the password generator.
- For retail and shipping barcodes, use the barcode generator.
FAQ
Do these QR codes expire?
No. The data is inside the image and no redirect server is involved, so the code keeps working even if this site disappears.
Can I use them commercially?
Yes. The QR code was developed by DENSO WAVE, which has stated it will not exercise its patent rights, so anyone may use it freely. “QR Code” itself is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE.
Is my Wi-Fi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is generated in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
