How to use

  1. Choose how many colors you want (1–10); a random palette appears as soon as the page opens.
  2. Press Generate or the Space key for new colors.
  3. Click the lock on any color you like. Locked colors stay put while the rest change.
  4. Pick a mood to limit colors to pastel, vivid or dark tones, and a format — HEX, RGB or HSL — to copy one color or the whole palette.

How colors are picked

Mood Method
Any color red, green and blue each drawn evenly from 0–255 — one of all 16,777,216 screen colors
Pastel any hue, saturation 45–80%, lightness 78–90%
Vivid saturation 75–100%, lightness 45–60%
Dark saturation 30–80%, lightness 15–32%

Random values come from the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues(), with rejection sampling so no value is favored when fitting a range. The text on each swatch switches between black and white, whichever has more contrast.

Ideas for using it

  • Slides: generate five vivid colors, lock one accent and one background, and reroll the rest until they sit well together.
  • Drawing practice: draw a limited-palette sketch using only three random colors.
  • Chart colors: on a dark dashboard, pastel colors stand out from the text and gridlines.

Things to keep in mind

  • Random colors are not guaranteed to match. For a rule-based scheme, put a color you like into the color palette generator to get complementary or analogous colors.
  • Check text and background pairs for contrast with the color converter.
  • Palettes are not saved; use Whole palette to copy a combination you want to keep.

FAQ

Why doesn’t the Space key work?

If a text box or button has focus, it receives Space first. Click an empty part of the page, then press Space.

Do locked colors survive when I change the number of colors?

Reducing the count removes colors from the end; increasing it adds new ones at the end. Locked colors near the start stay where they are.
